November 2007: New I-9 Form Required
For the past two decades employers have been required to certify that all employees are in the U.S. legally. Recent changes to the regulations reduce the number of documents employers may accept as proof of status for all employees hired on or after 11/7/07. A new I-9 form is also required (click here). This form must also be used when reverifying employees whose authorization to work has expired. Failure to comply may result in hefty legal and financial consequences, and will probably increase the likelihood of audit.
